About Grand Forks

If you are thinking of visiting or moving to Grand Forks, North Dakota then make sure that you enjoy four very distinct, if short, seasons. Grand Forks is known for its harsh, bitter, snowy winters and summers that are quite obviously the polar opposite of the winters. You can expect the weather to shower the residents and visitors with frequent thunderstorms and the temperature varying from pleasantly warm to humid and hot. Fortunately, the Grand Forks Air Force Base makes for a very busy town. Business and employment opportunities abound in Grand Forks. Small aircraft manufacturer, potato processing plant, and a flour mill can all be found listed in the Grand Forks, North Dakota business directory. Along with several dozen downtown retailers there are banks and supermarkets in the Grand Forks, North Dakota business directory.

Things to do and see if you are visiting are numerous. From arenas that hold concerts to ballet companies to performing arts they can all be found in the Grand Forks, North Dakota yellow pages. That's not all, this city knows how to entertain. There is the arts council, auditorium, and symphony to be found in the Grand Forks, North Dakota yellow pages also. One would never lack for anything to keep them entertained. Of course this is because the residents come from a long line of entertainers. By 1900, Grand Forks was growing rapidly owing to the brewery and the thirty plus saloons that cropped up on the opposite side of the river.

It all got started because of a man named Captain Alexander Griggs and his crew. His steamboat was stopped cold when the Red River froze in late 1870s forcing him and his crew to settle the 9-acre site. This site happened to be nestled at a fork between the Red River and the Red Lake River. Captain Griggs has since been given the title of "Father of Grand Forks." Even before that Les Grandes Fourches was a very important trading post for fur traders and trappers. It wasn't until the postal office was built that the name of the town changed to Grand Forks which is a literal translation of Les Grandes Fourches.
