West Orange is a municipality found in the northeastern part of the state of New Jersey in the United States of America. It is 18 miles west of New York City and lays at 40 degrees North and minus 74 degrees West. It is among a group of four municipalities that are collectively known as The Oranges. The township covers an area approximately 31km 2 and most of this area is covered by dry land because water only covers a mere 0.3km 2,which is equivalent to only 0.90% of the total area. Being a township, it is governed by the mayor-council system of municipality government that is provided for in the Faulkner act, which provides for all New Jersey Municipalities to adopt the mayor council system of government. On the national level, West Orange leans towards the Democrats as at the previous general elections held in 2008 where the Democrats' presidential candidate got a whopping 68% against the Republican who only got 29%.
West Orange municipality was part of Newark, the largest municipality of New Jersey, until 1806 when the oranges territory was separated to form The Orange Township by an act of the New Jersey state legislature. The first government to rule was elected in the following year on the 13th of April 1807. Later in 1860, the Oranges were united into a town and as a result achieving the stature of a town where they elected the first mayor, after which they would now have fire departments, police, street, and other town departments. Almost immediately the Town of Orange began to separate into the various members of The Oranges due to local disputes about the cost of forming the departments. In particular the West Orange separated on March 14, 1863 and it included Fairmount, which had separated earlier from the Orange city.The city also hosts the first ever movie studio, which was called Edison's Black Maria. West Orange city is a hotbed for media and multimedia stations because it hosts WFME-Radio and their sister Project WFME-TV, which can all be found in the West Orange, NJ business directory. The population of West Orange Town was around 45,000 residents in 16,480 households as of the 2000 United States elections. Education in this city is provided from the Kindergarten level all through to the 12th grade.
