Gallup, New Mexico is a southwestern city with flair. There are many people who make this city home, about 20,000 people, and it is one of the larger cities in New Mexico. This is a city that is surrounded by mountains and is located west of Albuquerque and is the most populous city between Albuquerque and Flagstaff. Gallup is a town reminiscent of the old west. It is a town that has lots of flair. Gallup is located near native American lands and is close to tribal lands of the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes. It is a city that is surrounded by the beautiful red outcrops of rock. Historic Route 66 runs through Gallup. It is mentioned in a song dedicated to the route. One notable fact about Gallup is that one third of the cities population has Native American roots. It is located in McKinely County, New Mexico and is the county seat.
The explorer Coranado first encountered the Gallup area in 1540. He encountered an Indian civilization that was quite sophisticated and had a network of roads in place uncommon for the day. Gallup later became the trail head of the Atlantic and Pacific railway in the 1800s. Gallup also enjoyed a reputation as a rough and tumble frontier town in the 1800s. It later became a center for commerce.
Gallup has a four season climate. It is known for it's sunny days and low humidity. Another thing that helps Gallup to stand out is its trading posts. The trading posts can be found in the Gallup, New Mexico yellow pages. Gallup has a wide variety of Indian trading posts, located all throughout the city. Gallup has a small downtown city area about 12 blocks and is best explored on foot. Various businesses can be located in the Gallup New Mexico business directory.
