For such a small city, Roswell has definitely struggled to pull through. The many wars and raids that hit the small city played a big part in this city's history. Roswell, New Mexico is the site for the UFO crash that took place in 1947. This incident involved recovery of alien corpses from an object that crashed near the city. This incident caused a large debate and controversy since the 1970s. Military officials encouraged the cities inhabitants to believe that what was actually recovered was debris from an experiment that didn't involve any alien activity. Their theory led others to believe that they were participating in some type of cover up and the controversy continued for many years. This incident became widely known even today and is the many reasons for the visitors who visit. it has also become a very popular subject that seems to now encourage some books, science fiction television series, and even video games. There is also a celebration for this event that usually takes place around July 4th weekend every year. Many comic books and music celebrate the event of the UFO crash.
From 1947, Roswell became of importance to the military considering their main air force was located there. The base closed in 1961, becoming more of a community or city for the retired crowd. At some point there was a factory built in the city that really didn't benefit people much because of its continuous opening and closing. many people were caught in the spiral of unemployment several times because of the factory's consistent closings. In the 1980s, the corporation that built the first factory in Roswell also started making buses that would assist people in their transportation needs, but just like the closing of the factory, soon they stop making buses as well. In 2003 the factory was opened by another company and has been opened ever since.
In 2002, the city was given the "All American City" reward, which is awarded to ten cities in the United States. It is the oldest community recognition program in the nation, yet still used. The award is to recognize cities that work together to identify and tackle community wide challenges and Roswell has certainly had its share of challenges throughout the years.
