Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. Established in 1598 as a part of New Spain, Santa Fe is translated as "Holy Faith" from Spanish. The city is the highest capital above sea level in the United States, at 7,199 feet. The climate in the area is typical of most New Mexico, hot, dry summers and cold winters, with some snowfall.
The city is well known for its' multicultural arts and history. Many buildings are built in the Pueblo Revival style, taking inspiration from Spanish architecture, while adding a touch of modernism. Since 1958 all buildings built and restored, especially in the historic district, must exhibit traditional Spanish pueblo or territorial style. Many new houses are built from concrete or other modern materials and have earned the nickname faux-dobe, after the adobe construction.
Many artists have resided in Santa Fe, one of the most prominent being Georgia O'Keefe. A museum in her honor is also in Santa Fe, showcasing her artwork as well as others in the genre. Canyon Road and the Santa Fe Plaza have the most art galleries in the city. Collectors and visitors from around the world come to view these works.
Tourism is the second biggest economic sector in Santa Fe. Various attractions bring visitors to the city. The San Miguel Chapel is said to be the oldest church in the US, the adobe's walls were constructed in 1610 A.D. Most tourists visit downtown Santa Fe and the Plaza. Another popular landmark is Museum Hill and Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, which takes place each year in July.
Santa Fe Fiesta is an annual event held in the Plaza. Established in 1712, after the Proclamation of 1712, the Fiesta commemorates the peaceful resettlement of Santa Fe. History is still the main focus of the Fiesta, but modern influences can be seen as well. The Fiesta runs from March through September, the most eventful month being July. Dances and shows dominate the event.
Parks and recreation are also popular among locals and tourists. Snow in the winter months allows for skiing and snowboarding. In the summer, visitors can hike through trails with amazing views. River rafting on the legendary Rio Grande and Rio Chama rivers is a great experience. Golfing and biking are also available for sport fans.
Gambling is legal and Santa Fe and various casinos in the area provide entertainment. Not just gamblers can enjoy these attractions, singers and comedians are also featured there. Whether it is a historical adventure or a relaxing vacation you seek, Santa Fe does not disappoint.
