Newark is a city which is located in Ohio of the United States. The city is precisely located 33 miles away from Columbus; it is near the Licking River. Most of the time the city is confused with Newark, NJ which according to census reports has a way bigger population than that of Newark, Ohio, which is 47,573. Of the 19.8 square miles which makes up Newark 19.5 is land and the rest is water. It is reported that the median income of the citizens is about $19,791. This obviously puts most of the cities citizens below the poverty line. Despite the cities faults it does have allot of history attached to it.
Before European contact, natives inhabited this area for nearly two thousand years it is said. The people of the hope well culture transformed the area where Newark now resides. It is said they constructed earthen mounds and enclosures, which was recorded as the largest earthwork complex recorded in history. These earthworks are now labeled as a national historical landmark; the site was preserved so that the people of Newark would know of the ancient history and its significance. It is also said that Indian tribes also inhabited this land years later as they were descendants of the hope well culture. In 1802 European and American settlers started to explore around this land. It was General William C. Schenck who stumbled across this land. He named the new village after his New Jersey hometown. Later the town started to grow allot bigger. This was thanks to major transportation and trade networks. In 1825 thanks to the Ohio and Erie Canal project it became a stop along cities like Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis. This was because of a railroad which connected the cities together. And in 1909 the infamous Arcade opened its doors. This was really big for Newark because it happened to be one of their first successful emporiums that they had built. After many renovations to became 60,000 square feet.
There is allot of interesting history in this great city. It went through allot of the stuff which made this country what it is today. And research of the Newark, OH yellow pages or the Newark, OH business directory; will give you a better sense of what it has to offer.
