Edmond, OK is located in the middle of Oklahoma, just along the northern border of Oklahoma City. The population of 81,093 makes it the sixth largest city in the state. The city has a conservative community with a number of protestant churches alongside a few Catholic and LDS ones. The city has been awarded a number of honors throughout its long history, including a listing as one of the top 100 places by a national magazine. The city began in 1887 when the Santa Fe rail line made its way west. In 1889, during the Oklahoma land Run the city took the name Edmond after the rail agent who created the massive station in that part of Oklahoma. While most of the remnants of that original rail have long since been replaced, the city does have a train station and supports the rails through the BNSF freight line. Much of the city grew out of that initial land rush and the population has been steady for the past few decades. In fact, the first schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory was erected in Edmond and still stands as a monument to that achievement. Edmond is home to two university campuses: the University of Central Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Christian University. The University of Central Oklahoma is a large one with a student body over 18,000. It has the distinction of being the first educational institution in the state for higher learning. The university has a long and proud history. The campus offers visitors a great retreat and beautiful architecture to soak in, as many of the buildings have stood since its inception. The Oklahoma Christian University is a private university for more than 2,100 Christian faith students. This campus also brings in a number of jobs to the community and rivals many regional institutions in academy and purpose.
