The second largest city in the state of Oklahoma abounds with culture and diversity. Settled by the Lochapoka and Creek Native American Tribes under the shade of a wide oak tree this piece of land was known to them as "Tallasi" meaning "old town." Tallasi, which later became Tulsa was incorporated in 1898. Because of the discovery of the nearby Glenn Pool, the abundance of rolling terrain and an average yearly temperature of 68 degrees, Tulsa quickly grew to a population of over one hundred thousand by 1905. Having grown so large in such a small time the city is now known for its great businesses. The variety of businesses which include construction, health care, the latest technological finds and aerospace can all be found in the Tulsa, Oklahoma business directory.
For the fun lover, the things to do and see in Tulsa are a range of world-class art, museums, ballet and opera and of course a wonderfully full zoo. To find any or all of these things one only has to flip to the Tulsa, Oklahoma yellow pages and skim through the areas fine arts section. Spiritually, Tulsa is mainly Protestant and known as the "buckle of the Bible belt" because of the ever expanding Christian establishments and beliefs. Anyone visiting Tulsa rates it very high among places to see and stay. Sport divisions range from basketball to ice hockey in collegiate and national leagues. Art Deco can be seen by strolling down the streets of older neighborhoods, in many business office and public service buildings.
The influence of the Midwest and South are plain on almost every doorstep. This can be seen at festivals, cultural centers, and museums. The taste of these two cultural regions are blended into sublime perfection in the food that the city offers its customers. Cultures from all over the world can be found in Tulsa because of the eight international sister cities that Tulsa has been given. Flavors of the southern United States, Mexico, Russia, and China can be found in this great city that started in the shade of an old oak tree.
