Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is known throughout the United States and the world as the "City of Brotherly Love." The name Philadelphia is a word of Greek origin, stemming from the world "Philos" which means "love" and '"Adelphos" which means "brother." Philadelphia is the sixth most populous city in all of the United States. Philadelphia is by far one of the most historically rich cities in all of the country. During the times of British occupation, Philadelphia was the second largest city in all the British controlled territories, only behind London. It was here that the American fight for revolution and independence was begun thus making it the home of the infamous Liberty Bell. The United States Constitution was ratified here and was also the home of the two Constitutional Conventions. Philadelphia served as the capitol of the United States from 1790 to 1800 up until the construction of the current nation's capitol of Washington, D.C., named in honor of the first president of the U.S. and the first to ratify the Constitution in George Washington.
The climate in Philadelphia is one where the summers are hot and muggy, the spring and fall are temperate, and the winters can be very cold. As a matter of fact, it has been recorded that the snowiest winter in the history of the city was the historical winter of 2009-2010 when nearly 80 inches of snow fell on the city. There is a very diverse culture in Philadelphia and is known as one of the major African American hubs in all of the country. Philadelphia is also a big sports town playing host to Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball League, and the National Hockey League, one of the few cities that can boast that feat.
