About South Carolina

South Carolina is located in the southeastern United States. It is bordered by North Carolina, Georgia, and the Atlantic Ocean. As of 2010, South Carolina ranks 24th in population. The state was originally part of the Province of Carolina and as a member of the 13 Colonies, declared independence from England. South Carolina played an important role in the US Civil War. It was the first state to secede. The first shots of the war were those fired during the attack on Ft Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor. South Carolina holds political significance even today, as it is the first southern state to hold a presidential primary. The northern coast of the Palmetto State has become known as the Grand Strand. It is a popular vacation destination. The city of Myrtle Beach is the center of activity. Here you will find golf, amusements parks, the state children's museum, restaurants, and night life. Francis Marion University is located in this area. The Grand Strand can be fun and exciting, but also family friendly.

The southeastern portion of South Carolina is called the Low Country. This is where you will find the port of Charleston. This historic city is one of the best places to go for a look into what life was like in the antebellum south. The famous and exclusive island of Hilton Head is located in this area. The Medical University of South Carolina and The Citadel Military College call Charleston home. Strategically located between the major cities of Atlanta and Charlotte is The Upstate region. It is one of the fastest growing regions in the state, has four mild seasons, and you can see the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the horizon. You can enjoy hiking, fishing, and boating as well as arts and entertainment. Clemson University and the manufacturing facilities for several international companies are located in the upstate.

The Midlands is the area in the middle of South Carolina. This area is halfway between the upstate mountains and low country beaches. In this central part of the state, you will find the capital of Columbia, the University of South Carolina, and the Ft Jackson military base. Columbia is also home to an award-winning zoo. South Carolina is crisscrossed by several major interstates and is served by four mid-sized airports as well as the Amtrak train. The South Carolina economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism.
