The city of Greenville, South Carolina is located in the upstate region of the state, precisely the northwestern corner. As of 2009, there were over 62,000 residents in the city of Greenville and is the third largest city in the state. Greenville is part of the Greenville-Spartansburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area which has a total of nearly 1.3 million people. Greenville sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is dotted with smalls hills and some of the largest peaks in South Carolina are not very far from the downtown area. Mining has a long history in the Greenville area that dates back to the early 1800s. Rubies, garnets, emeralds, and granite are mined in Greenville and the surrounding areas. The climate in Greenville is one that is humid subtropical which means that the winters can be short and cold, with hot and muggy summers, and moderate spring and fall weather.

Greenville has been widely recognized for its contributions to the textile industry. As a matter of fact during the early part of the 20th Century, Greenville was known as the "Textile Center of the South." The 1970s saw a huge revitalization of the downtown area of Greenville which actually is still taking place to this very day. Most of this development has been attributed to the efforts of former Mayor Max Heller who in 2009 was honored with a statue in the downtown part of the city. There are several venues in the city that stage concerts and expositions which are namely the 16,000 seat Bi-Lo Center, The Historical Warehouse Theatre, and Fluor Field which is the home of the Class A Greenville Drive, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
