About Knoxville

The Marble City is one nickname for Knoxville, Tennessee. It was named so because of the number of quarries that dotted the landscape and supplied pink marble throughout the country. The National Gallery of Art was constructed using Knoxville marble. The city itself was named for the Secretary of War, Henry Knox. Although not the earliest humans in this region, the Cherokee became dominant by the eighteenth century. In the heart of the Great Valley of East Tennessee and at the headwaters of the Tennessee River is where today's Knoxville is located.
