Murfreesboro, Tennessee is located in the central part of the state. The city was originally settled in 1811 and incorporated in 1817. The 2010 Census recorded the population at 108,755, an increase of more than 40,000 from ten years earlier. Murfreesboro is a suburb of Nashville and as such has access to culture, economy, and education. The campus of Middle Tennessee State is located in the city. The city covers a rather large land area, which makes it easy for new developments to emerge, as they have done in the past decade. The city limits cover 39.2 square miles. Today the city offers bus lines for residents to use as travel throughout this large, Texan city.
One of the fastest growing cities in the US also has a booming economy, with everything from retail to light industry finding a home in the city limits. Murfreesboro has two major shopping areas, the Stones River Mall and The Avenue Murfreesboro. The latter center is more of a strip mall design with outdoor access to all the different stores, where the former is a traditional enclosed mall. Murfreesboro also publishes a daily newspaper, has excellent local radio and television stations, and a rather large county government employing 3,500 people. The nightlife is very active in the community, as are the various city sponsored events, like the Main Street Jazzfest and the Uncle Dave Macon Days event. The Center for the Arts hosts a number of theatrical performances, musical ensembles, concerts, and dance recitals throughout the year. Visitors to the city can take in a few museums too, like the Discovery Center at Murfree Springs or the Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village.
