About Galveston

Galveston, Texas is located southeast of Houston. The coastal city encompasses an enormous 208 square miles of land and, according to the most recent census, has a population of 47,743. The city was first settled in 1816. The city later became a major port during the Mexican-American war. Over the years the port has brought thousands of ships through, making Galveston a crucial route for trade ships and oil tankers. The port still operates today and helps to bring an influx of business and commerce to the city. Galveston enjoys a subtropical humid climate like much of Texas. The city does have a high risk of hurricanes due to its location along the eastern coast of Texas. A hurricane in 1900 demolished much of the city and is still considered one of the worst storms to ever hit the US. The city enjoys a fair amount of rain throughout the year, but rarely, if ever, sees snow. The average temperature during the coldest months still exceed freezing by a wide margin.

The economy of Galveston is very large and diverse. The Port of Galveston started the city off with a very strong commercial presence. The port has the ability to handle many different types of ships, including cargo and cruise ships. Galveston also has many companies with headquarters in the city. This includes the American National Insurance Company, the largest teaching hospital in the state at University of Texas Medical Branch, and several tourist oriented companies. To learn more about Galveston's expansive economy, be sure to check out the Galveston, Texas Business Directory for current contact information. The arts and culture of Galveston is very refined and active. Galveston has an Opera House, several historic buildings, amazing architecture, and museums celebrating the culture of the past two hundred years. Visitors to Galveston will have no trouble finding entertainment during their stay. The city also has a number of notable media outlets, including a local newspaper that was founded in 1842, making it the oldest print media outlet in the state.
