Irving, Texas is located in the north central portion of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 216,290. Irving is a suburb of Dallas-Fort Worth. The city was founded in 1903 and incorporated in 1914. Many may know the city as the previous home to the Dallas Cowboys, whose stadium was demolished in 2008 and rebuild in a nearby suburb. Today the city is home to many high class companies, cultural events for a diverse population, and prosperous families. Irving has a subtropical humid climate like much of northern Texas. Mild winters are the norm, while hot and humid summers occupy the other side of the coin. Warmer temperatures year round lead to more businesses offering outdoor recreation activities, like water parks. The city has a fair amount of recreational based businesses and even has a new waterpark. Irving covers a 67.7 square mile piece of land to the west of Dallas. A portion of the DFW airport is within the Irving city limits.
The economy of Irving is very robust and diverse. The major employers include Citigroup with 5,000 employees, Citi Financial with 4,000, and Verizon with 3,000. Other notable companies in the area include Allstate, CitiCorp, Microsoft, YRC Worldwide, and Archon Group. Many national chain style companies have headquarters in the city, including La Quinta Inns and Suites, Michaels Stores, Omni Hotels, Hostess, Kimberly-Clark, and dozens of others. Many people came to Irving for football, namely the Dallas Cowboys football. Now that the stadium has been moved, the city has started a multi development project in the stadium's wake. For entertainment, there are hundreds of bars, nightclubs, and small concert venues. The main Irving Convention Center was recently constructed and provides the large area for big events.
