Nestled in the heart of Texas is the city of Wylie. Wylie is quickly growing and expands into Dallas, County. Wylie has a population of 39,713. This is a 109.3% increase since 2000. Of the current population, 84.6% are Caucasian, 2.06% are African-,American and 10.4% are Hispanic or Latino. The average household income is $67,572 . Most residents are in their middle ages. Wylie's history traces back to 1887. This is when the small town was first incorporated. The city is named after Colonel W.D. Wylie. In 1887, the first post office was also opened in the city. Within two years, St. Louis Southwestern Railway had begun doing business in the small town. Unlike much of the nation, Wylie grew through the Great Depression. Dairy farming helped the city thrive during this time. The largest cash crop was the onion.

Wylie has also been plagued by many tragedies. On May 9, 1993 a tornado ripped through the area. Many homes and businesses were destroyed. Wylie is located in the heart of tornado alley. In 1998, two separate fires devastated the downtown area. The citizens of Wylie pulled together to revitalize the area. Wylie has many popular tourist attractions. If you are a fan of the television show, Dallas, you may be familiar with Southfork Ranch. Southfork Ranch is one of the most visited attractions in the area. The ranch is located in nearby Parker, Texas. If you enjoy the great outdoors, visit Lake Lavon and Lake Ray Hubbard. Both lakes offer fishing, camping, and swimming.
