About Alexandria

Founded in 1749, Alexandria, Virginia has a charming history. Alexandria was the hometown to the likes of George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Jim Morrison. The city has seen 3 wars in its long history; the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Alexandria will be commemorating two of these wars over the next few years, including the Civil War Sesquicentennial (2011-2015) and the War of 1812 Bicentennial (2012-2015). The city of Alexandria was also had one of the largest slave trading services in the country; however, it also had one largest free black communities in the country as well. The city served as a base for Union troops during the Civil War.

Many of the Historic buildings and businesses are still standing. Some places of interest in the area are: The Alexandria Archaeology Museum, where you will learn how the city manages and studies their archaeological resources. The Alexandria Black History Museum gives insight into the Black History of the city. The Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, is for those interested in learning about the Unions fort system used to protect Washington, DC during the Civil War, while offering exhibits and programs on the sites history. Visit Gadsby's Tavern Museum, to walk the grounds of the Hotel and Tavern that the likes of Washington and Jefferson visited regularly. Some of the special events you may find for the city: Civil War Sundays at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum are free and open to anyone! On most Mondays, the Gadsby's Tavern Museum has an event for Toddlers walking through 36 months, called Taverns Toddlers. You and your toddler will enjoy playtime in the historic Gadsby's ballroom.The city of Alexandria sits just South of Washington, DC. Overlooking the water front of the Potomac River. The Winter time temperatures in Alexandria has a High of 42 degree F and a low of 27 degrees F in January. The Summer temperatures are average highs of 88 degrees F and a low of 70 degrees F. The Winters in Alexandria are typically mild.
