The original name of Newport News was Elizabeth Cittie. By 1634, the population had grown to 5,000. Before the Civil War, the area was considered a fishing village. Many plantations were also found in the area. From the 1960s through the 1990s, population in the city exploded.

Newport News has grown tremendously since the first settlers arrived. In 2010, the population was at 180,719. This is up 0.3% from 2000. Of the population 52.7% are female. The Caucasian population is at 49% and the African American population is 40.9%. The average household income is $48,285. The crime rate in Newport News is slightly higher than the national average. In 2010, there were 8,724 crimes committed. Of these crimes, 1,242 were violent crimes. Theft is the largest crime reported in the city. This city has become rich in culture.
