Richmond, Virgina is a city full of rich and varied history. Richmond first came to notoriety as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. However, even prior to that Richmond was settled briefly by English settlers who were part of the original Jamestown Colony. It became the capital city of Virginia. Patrick Henry's famous "Give Me Liberty or Give me Death" speech was given at St. John's church in Richmond in the 1770s .Modern day Richmond is a city along the banks of the James River and it's population is 200,120 people and it's metro area is over two million people making it the third largest metro area in Virginia.
Richmond is a city that has many civil war monuments, and has a street called Monument Avenue which has statues to those who fought in the great civil war. The State Capital of Virginia is also located on Monument Ave. Richmond has a vibrant downtown area and is home to two universities, Virginia Commonwealth University is located here along with the University of Richmond. Richmond is a great tourist city and should be included on anyone's tour of civil war sites and monuments.
Many businesses, including Fortune 500 companies make their home in Richmond. A person can find information about these businesses by using the Richmond, Virginia business directory, which has a listing of all the various businesses that dot the area. Richmond also has some great shopping, some of which is based on the historical sites in the city. Canal Walk is an area devoted to some shopping based on historical areas. Short Pump shopping area is located in the west end of Richmond. It is an upscale shopping center, and has many name brand stores such as Nordstrom, and Dicks Sporting Goods. It is also home to a number of restaurants including the Cheesecake Factory. Some of the other businesses and retailers can be found by using the Richmond, Virginia Yellow Pages. Other shopping opportunities abound in Richmond including Carytown with it's specialty boutiques, and the Chesterfield Town Center located south of the city. With all of it's history and tourism, Richmond, Virginia is a fine town to visit.
