Vermont is a state within the northeastern New England region of the United States. Settlers first arrived to the area from New York in 1724. Following the successful move, residents from New Hampshire began moving to Vermont in 1749, and then Massachusetts followed in suit in 1763. This made for an interesting debate, as both New York and New Hampshire provinces wanted control over the area.
Prior to becoming a state within the United States, Vermont was the Vermont Republic, an independent state. The capital was Windsor before becoming Castleton. It had a Republic government with 3 serving Governors prior to statehood. Currency within the Republic was Vermont coppers with the Latin motto stella quarta decimal, meaning The Fourteenth Star, inscribed around them. Vermont created the first written constitution for a state, with the Constitution of Vermont, drafted by Elijah West in 1777 at Windsor Tavern. The state finally joined the United States following the Revolutionary War in 1790. This act was considered to balance out the vote. Vermont was considered a free state, meaning slavery was abolished. Kentucky was not and joined the United States shortly after Vermont and was not.
Current statistics within the state are very interesting. Vermont has a total area of only 9,620 square miles with a width of 80 miles and a length of 160 miles. It is considered the 45th largest in the United States, making it the 5th smallest state in the country. It is also the second least populated state as well. With only 625,741 people living within Vermont, there are less people in the entire state than within most large cities in other states. The current median income for residents is $52,104. Vermont is generally a less expensive option when considering east coast travel. As the state boasts 4 seasons similar to the local and more expensive states, such as New York, it is a more economical trip available. In the spring there is the Vermont Maple Festival and back country biking. In the summer there are golfing and camping opportunities. There is also the Champlain Valley Fair and the Marlboro Music Festival. In the fall the leaves turn beautiful shades, which create an influx of bordering states residents coming in to see the leaves change. Apple festivals, Halloween and corn mazes make fall the best time to visit Vermont. In the winter, snow falls creating the perfect backdrop for sleigh rides and Christmas parties.
